Work at a SalonSalons are by far the largest employer of cosmetologists, with more than 400,000 salons in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s data for 2002, the most recent year available. Salon businesses vary. While some are hair-only, nails-only or traditional barber shops, most are full-service salons that offer hair services, manicures, pedicures and, frequently, a small selection of skin care services like facials and waxing.
