by BRENDA G. ANDERSON

Starting first salon is hair-raising experience for Mobile man

Monday, November 12, 2007

Brent Johnson, 26, has used his artistic skills in decorating his hair salon shop in Fairhope.

Located in Plantation Pointe Shopping Center, Johnson's shop reflects his taste for individuality. Corrugated tin roofing lines the walls. Black Sears Craftsman tool boxes serve as the work stations for the hair stylists. Waiting customers relax on contemporary gray, beige and black sofas.

My First Salon Job Changed My Life

by Desiree Vittorio

Most young people ask themselves the same questions: Who am I? and Why am I here? The answers cannot be found easily.

I did not know what my purpose in life was when I graduated from a suburban high school near Chicago. I was confused and sad. Sometimes, you must take a detour down a strange path before you can see who you are. I decided to get up and find out who on earth I was and what I was doing here. Along my journey, I found two of the most unforgettable people who influenced my life forever.

DERMACiA

Many have heard the makers of Dermacia claim that their product can help “cure” acne. But is there any truth to their claim?

Myth: Those with darker skin needn't be concerned about skin cancer.

Fact: This misconception can be the kiss of death — literally. While ethnic skin provides some built-in "sun block" against the rays that can kill, its natural protection (approximating SPF 10) isn't enough to promise immunity.

Work at a Salon

by Anonymous Contributor
Salons are by far the largest employer of cosmetologists, with more than 400,000 salons in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s data for 2002, the most recent year available. Salon businesses vary. While some are hair-only, nails-only or traditional barber shops, most are full-service salons that offer hair services, manicures, pedicures and, frequently, a small selection of skin care services like facials and waxing.
