Michelle grew up on the south side of Chicago and commuted over an hour everyday to get to high school. She attended Princeton University for her undergraduate education and Harvard Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. She is only the third First Lady with a postgraduate degree. She met Barack Obama while they were both working at the same law firm and the couple married in 1992. Before entering the political spotlight, she was an Associate Dean of Students at University of Chicago, and she then went on to be Vice President of Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals. She’s been compared to Jackie Kennedy for her fashion sense and poise. Her mother, Marian Robinson, moved into the White House to help take care of the Obamas’ two children, Malia and Sasha. Mrs. Obama is an honorary member of the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.
